“I wasn’t buying luggage sizers; I was buying the service of the GC team. I’ve been in business for 30 years, so I know if these guys are good or not. They're on it. They happen to have good pricing, but the care and attention are great. They get it done, and they care. If we had a similar project, we would for sure approach them again.”
— Jasen Robalo, Founder and CEO, Fenceline Rentals Ltd.
GC Custom Metal worked with Fenceline Rentals to manufacture custom luggage sizers for deployment across multiple airports for an international airline. Working from a provided sample and drawings, GC supported fabrication design improvements, prototyping, and full production. GC handled fabrication and powder coating, while Fenceline managed final assembly.
The airline and Fenceline Rentals required a fabricator that could support design changes, prototyping, and production under a tight timeline. Quick turnaround was important, and in-house powder coating played a key role by eliminating the need to ship raw material to a third-party finisher. This removed a major cost and logistics burden and helped keep the project on schedule. Fenceline noted that GC’s structure for executing projects and overall capacity were extremely valuable in meeting the timeline.
The project required refinement beyond the original sample and drawings, as well as coordination between design, fabrication, and finishing. One technical challenge involved edge finishing on the bottom box. There was no defined specification for edge quality, and fully buffed edges would have significantly increased costs. GC worked closely with Fenceline to find a creative solution for a practical, cost-effective middle ground that improved appearance while maintaining consistency across all units.
To achieve uniform results, GC coordinated third-party edge sanding rather than relying on manual, in-house grinding. This approach ensured each piece was identical and balanced technical requirements with cost control. Throughout the process, GC Custom Metal remained highly focused on the desired outcome and on making the project executable from a practical perspective.
GC Custom Metal worked from the provided samples and drawings, made design improvements in collaboration with Fenceline, produced prototypes and samples, and then moved into production. GC provided guidance on manufacturability, edge finishing options, and cost-efficient ways to achieve the required final appearance. GC collaborated closely with Fenceline, providing communication, experience, and expertise.
The finished product was warrantied by Fenceline, and no issues were reported after deployment.
The project executed smoothly within a tight timeline, and the baggage sizers performed as expected. Units were produced and deployed in airports worldwide, including locations in Mexico, the Bahamas, and Newfoundland.
Fenceline highlighted GC’s extensive experience, practical problem-solving, attention to detail, strong communication, and ability to execute under tight timelines. In-house powder coating reduced handling and logistics costs by eliminating third-party finishing steps, contributing to a reliable and cost-effective outcome.
